A Morning of Storytelling at Burford Primary School!

This month, I had the pleasure of visiting Burford Primary School for a special storytelling session celebrating the Oxfordshire theme, ‘People That Help Us’. It was a cheery reminder of the magic that appears when children share and listen to a story as well as how a connection can be made to different concepts in the real world.

Class members from across the school joined the session, from the bright-eyed nursery group to the thoughtful pupils of Key Stages 1 and 2, with their brilliantly curious questions about the series. I read ‘Alice the Palace Postwoman’ which fitted with the theme. In Alice’s world, help is never far away - Ruby Robin assists Alice on her postal round, while Syril Squirrel helps Alfie (Alice’s post associate) on his deliveries. The children loved searching for Ruby Robin in the illustrations as the story unfolded and meeting crocheted Ruby who always accompanies any story time.

The theme also gave me the opportunity to highlight the real people who helped bring the series to life. I spoke about Helen Wallace, the wonderful illustrator who transformed the vision of the books into beautiful images, and the eco-focused printing company that helped ensure the books were produced sustainably, keeping them as green in nature as “Alice Green”. I also highlighted the important role of people like Carol-Amy Holdcroft, Library Manager at Bampton & Burford Library, who help share a love of books and stories across the community.

The day was wrapped up with interaction with parents, and stickers & bookmarks for everyone! Wonderful thanks to the parents who shared a photo to celebrate the visit! 💌🙏
